Configuring and Using WS-FTP

You can download a free copy of the latest version of WS-FTP at: www.download.com. Just put WS-FTP into the Quick Search box and press Go. You will be taken to a page where you can then download WS-FTP and then install it onto your computer.

The instructions that follow assume that you have a copy of WS-FTP installed on your  computer. It is also assumed that you are connected to the Internet.

When you use the WS-FTP program the first time, you will need to create a Site Profile for the website you want to work with. During the Site Profile creation process, the program will ask you for the following information.

  1. Profile Name: Domain Name (or Website Name)
  2. Host Name/Address: Domain Name (e.g., cyberiacom.net) OR
  3. Host Name/Address: IP Address (if domain name is not yet active).
  4. Host Type: Automatic detect
  5. User ID: Username provided to you in your hosting account setup email
  6. Password: Password (Make sure the "Save Pwd" box is checked.)
  7. Click the "OK" button
  8. Now Select This Profile From The List of Profiles You Have Created and Press Connect
  9. WSFTP will log in to the server, and display the root directory for your hosting account.
  10. You are now connected to your webspace on our server. You should be seeing something that looks like this.

  1. The left window displays the list of directories and files on your Local System (your desktop computer's hard drive)
  2. The right window displays the list of directories and website files on the Remote System (your webspace on our server).
  3. In either window, you can change directories by clicking on their names or by using the Green Up Arrow that appears in the upper left corner of each window (it moves you up one level in the directory tree).
  4. Now all you have to do is locate the website files on your Local System (or hard drive) that you want to copy to your webspace on our server.
  5. When you have located those files, highlight them and click on the right arrow between the Local System and Remote System windows. Copies of those files will now be sent out over the Internet and stored in your webspace on our server.  Note: You can also drag and drop files from the left window into the right window.
  6. That's it. Your website files should be showing up online now. You can transfer any type of file in this manner, webpages, images, pdf files, etc.
  7. If you ever need to copy website files from the Remote System to your computer, just use the left pointing arrow or drag the files from the right window into the left window.
